Three Lions captain Harry Kane has assured fans that England still have “another gear” to reach as they prepare for their World Cup semi-final clash against Argentina on Wednesday.

The England skipper is gearing up to lead his nation into their fourth semi-final in the last five major tournaments. This comes after Jude Bellingham’s brace secured a hard-fought extra-time victory over Norway in Miami, booking England’s place in the last four.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration with certain “sloppy” aspects of England’s display against the Norwegians. Kane admitted the team can and will improve upon that performance.

“We know we can improve and we know we can play better,” said the Bayern Munich forward.

“But ultimately we are in a World Cup semi-final, something that hasn’t always been the case for this national side, so we must enjoy that moment.

“When he [Tuchel] watches us train, sees our togetherness, and understands what we’re capable of – especially with the players we have, our attacking style, one-on-ones, and technical ability – he just wants to see that version of us on the pitch.”

Kane added that Tuchel is aware that things are not always straightforward. “He knows as well as anyone that it’s not that simple. We’re up against strong opponents and quality teams. He’s trying to draw the best out of us, and we know within ourselves that there’s another level we can reach.”

Asked whether England have displayed that higher level during the tournament, Kane responded: “We haven’t shown it fully yet – only in flashes,” he admitted.

“Against Norway, there were glimpses, but we didn’t have the full control we’d like to achieve. Still, at this point in the tournament, you’re facing some of the best teams in the world. We’ll be playing one of them again in the semi-final. What’s most satisfying is that we’re in the last four and still feel there’s room to get better.”

“It’s not something to get carried away with,” Kane continued. “We’re showing plenty of positives. The way the boys defended collectively against Norway and the way we attacked – there were still some really strong moments. Jude stepped up again with two crucial goals. Overall, we can be very pleased.”
