The elderly man had gone to the CSP as part of his regular monthly routine to collect his pension. After biometric verification, the CSP operator checked his account balance and was reportedly shocked by what appeared on the screen.
According to the pensioner's family, the operator printed the updated balance in the passbook, revealing an amount exceeding Rs.759 crore.
"We couldn't believe what we were seeing. We had only come to withdraw Rs.1,100. Everyone at the centre was surprised, and we became worried that something had gone wrong," the pensioner's son said.
The family immediately returned home and informed villagers, and within hours the unusual incident spread across the area.
Bank officials have clarified that the pensioner did not actually receive Rs.759 crore. They said the enormous balance was the result of a technical glitch in the banking system, not a genuine transfer of funds.
According to the branch manager, such errors can occasionally occur during server maintenance, software updates, or data synchronization within the bank's Core Banking System (CBS).
As a precautionary measure, the bank has temporarily blocked all transactions in the account until the issue is fully investigated.
Officials confirmed that:
This is not the first time such an incident has surfaced in Bihar. In previous years, account holders in Khagaria and Katihar also found crores of rupees unexpectedly reflected in their bank accounts. Investigations later revealed that those cases were caused by software or server glitches rather than real deposits.
What Should Customers Do?Banking experts advise customers to avoid withdrawing or spending any unusually large amount that unexpectedly appears in their account.
If an incorrect balance is displayed, customers should immediately report it to their bank. Attempting to use money that does not legally belong to them could lead to legal consequences.
While the incident briefly made the pensioner appear to be a billionaire on paper, bank officials have confirmed that it was purely a technical error and that the balance will be corrected after the system review is completed.
