Alejandro Garnacho’s challenging spell at Stamford Bridge appears to be nearing an early conclusion following remarks made by newly appointed Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. The Argentine forward, who joined the Blues from Manchester United just a year ago with significant expectations, is now being linked with a move away as the club undertakes a major squad overhaul.
Alonso hints at Garnacho’s impending departure
Alonso has suggested that Garnacho’s time in West London may be drawing to a close after only one disappointing season. When questioned about the winger’s future, the Spanish manager stopped short of confirming that the former Manchester United youngster would remain part of his long-term plans. He revealed that discussions with the club’s hierarchy regarding a possible transfer are already well advanced.
Confirming that there is active interest in Garnacho, particularly from Serie A side AS Roma, Alonso was measured but transparent about the situation. “We’ve spoken with the sporting directors and there is interest in him from other clubs. Let’s see how it progresses, but hopefully it concludes in the best possible way for everyone,” Alonso told reporters, as quoted by The Telegraph.
A testing first season in London
Garnacho’s switch from Manchester United last August for £40 million was initially viewed as a major coup for Chelsea. However, the transfer has not yielded the anticipated results. The 22-year-old struggled to find form throughout the 2025-26 season, scoring just once in the Premier League as Chelsea finished a disappointing 10th. His inconsistent performances ultimately saw him miss out on Argentina’s World Cup squad.
The club’s financial situation has also become a pressing concern after a season without European competition. Manchester United are entitled to a 10 per cent sell-on clause, which will influence any forthcoming negotiations. With Chelsea having recorded significant financial losses in recent years, reducing the wage bill and generating transfer income has become a central focus for the new leadership team at Cobham.
Chelsea favour permanent transfer
Despite his underwhelming stint in England, Garnacho remains a sought-after player in Italy. Napoli, Juventus and AC Milan are all reportedly monitoring his situation, while Roma have already indicated interest in signing him on loan.
Nevertheless, Chelsea have made their stance clear. The club’s recruitment department is not open to loan proposals and is pushing for a permanent sale to recover their investment in the player.
Alonso begins rebuilding project at Stamford Bridge
While several exits appear imminent, Alonso’s focus is on initiating a full-scale cultural rebuild at Chelsea. Having agreed to a four-year deal, the Spaniard’s objective is to restore the club’s Champions League credentials and revive the competitive standards that once defined the Blues. He has stressed that the process of transformation starts immediately as he seeks to move past the disappointments of the 2025-26 campaign.
“We are starting from zero,” Alonso said. “Of course, returning to Europe is a goal. But to achieve that, we must get many things right — from how we want to play to how we see ourselves and how we approach each match. That’s my responsibility. We definitely want to get there, and time will tell, but our ambition is high. We need to demonstrate that energy, determination and hunger to succeed.”
