Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that he intends to keep Enzo Fernandez at Stamford Bridge, despite persistent rumours linking the Argentine midfielder with a move to Real Madrid. The World Cup winner has reportedly been the subject of discussions between his representatives and other clubs, but Alonso has stressed his desire to retain the player as part of his long-term plans.
Alonso addresses transfer speculation
During his first press conference since taking charge of Chelsea in May, Alonso reaffirmed that he has no intention of letting Fernandez leave the club. Reports had suggested that the 25-year-old’s agent had begun exploring a possible move away from West London, with Real Madrid identified as a leading contender for his signature. However, Alonso was quick to dismiss any suggestion that a transfer was on the cards.
Manager keen to retain midfielder
Speaking to the media, Alonso shared his enthusiasm for leading a new era at Stamford Bridge and clarified the club’s position on Fernandez’s future. The 44-year-old confirmed that he had spoken directly with the Argentine international, who has been representing his country impressively at the World Cup. Although Alonso declined to share the details of their discussion, he was unequivocal when asked about the outcome. “Yes, we have spoken. But as you can imagine, what we discussed will remain private,” he said.
When asked if he wanted Fernandez to stay at Chelsea, Alonso responded with a brief but decisive answer: “Yes.”
Long-term deal offers security
Despite constant speculation, Chelsea remain in a strong position regarding Fernandez’s future, as the midfielder is tied to a long-term contract running until June 2032. The Argentine star has also played a vital role in helping his national team reach the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. Following the tournament, he is expected to take a short holiday before returning to club duties at the end of July.
Looking ahead, Alonso is focused on restoring Chelsea’s competitive edge and guiding the team back to the top of English football. He also spoke of his ambition to secure a return to European competition, stating: “That’s the objective, but to reach that goal, we need to do many things right. It’s about how we want to play, how we want to see ourselves, and how we approach each game. That’s my responsibility, and I’m really looking forward to it. But certainly, we want to be back there.”
The Spaniard also expressed optimism about the fresh start being ushered in by his coaching team. “After last season, we’re starting from scratch… There are some new faces among the staff and the management. But everyone is enthusiastic about what we’re doing. You can feel the positive energy and excitement,” Alonso added.
What’s next for Chelsea and Fernandez?
According to reports, Chelsea expect Fernandez to return to London for pre-season training as planned once his post-tournament break ends. Alonso faces the crucial task of building cohesion within his newly assembled squad ahead of the new campaign, which begins in August. His first competitive fixture as Chelsea manager in the Premier League will be a challenging away match against London rivals Fulham.
