Good news has arrived for head coach Thomas Tuchel as England prepare for their crucial FIFA World Cup semi-final clash against Argentina.
Midfielder Declan Rice has recovered from illness just in time and is now fit to feature for the Three Lions in their upcoming semi-final encounter.
The influential vice-captain has endured a challenging tournament, struggling with fatigue, a stomach infection, calf discomfort, and lingering neural pain in his hamstring and lower back as England navigated an eventful journey to the final four in North America this summer.
Rice, who plays for Arsenal, was substituted at half-time during Saturday’s tense quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami, with his club teammate Eberechi Eze coming on to replace him.
Although manager Thomas Tuchel explained that the change was a tactical decision, Rice appeared visibly drained as he exited the stadium following the match.
The 25-year-old had spent much of the three days leading up to the Norway fixture confined to bed while recovering from a stomach bug.
However, according to Standard Sport, Rice is now expected to be fully fit and ready to start Wednesday’s highly anticipated semi-final against defending champions Argentina at Atlanta Stadium.
Rice, who had also been withdrawn during the Group L opener against Croatia and later rested for the win over Panama, reportedly began to feel significantly better once England returned to their Kansas City training camp after the extra-time victory over Norway, which was secured by two goals from Jude Bellingham.
The Major League Soccer (MLS) referee assigned to officiate the semi-final had earlier been in charge of Brazil’s shock round-of-16 defeat to Norway, during which he awarded two penalties. He also oversaw the Netherlands' dramatic draw with Japan in the group stage and Spain’s fiery win over Uruguay.
