A suspected leader of a drug trafficking organization has been brought before a San Diego court, where US prosecutors allege he managed a complex network of tunnels used for smuggling large amounts of drugs from Mexico into California. Genaro Lopez, aged 54, appeared in federal court on Monday, following connections made to several significant drug seizures and advanced underground tunnels identified in recent years.

Investigation Initiated from 2021 Drug Raid

The inquiry began in 2021 when law enforcement intercepted three vehicles departing from a suspected stash house in Chula Vista. Authorities seized 241 kilograms of cocaine, eight firearms—including two ghost guns—ammunition, high-capacity magazines, and around $40,000 in cash. Four of Lopez's alleged associates were arrested during this operation and have since pleaded guilty and received sentences. Lopez was not apprehended at that time and remained at large until his capture in March 2026.

Discovery of Secret Tunnel in Subsequent Operation

The investigation broadened in 2022 when authorities monitored another suspected stash house in National City, stopping four vehicles leaving the site. This search resulted in a larger haul, including nearly 800 kilograms of cocaine, 74.8 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 1.6 kilograms of fentanyl. Investigators also discovered a sophisticated underground tunnel connecting Otay Mesa, California, to Tijuana, Mexico. According to the US Department of Justice, this tunnel was approximately 1,744 feet long, 61 feet deep, and 4 feet wide, featuring electricity, ventilation systems, and a rail track for transporting contraband. Six individuals were arrested during this operation, with five pleading guilty and receiving sentences, while one suspect remains at large.

Similar Tunnel Found Underneath Fake Business

Officials noted that this tunnel resembled another elaborate passage discovered beneath a fake "Buy 4 Less" store in Otay Mesa. That tunnel was nearly 1,933 feet long, about 55 feet deep, and constructed with robust materials, complete with electricity and ventilation. Law enforcement became aware of this operation after extensive surveillance revealed unusual activity at the store, which had very few legitimate customers.

Potential Life Sentence for Lopez

Lopez faces charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and conspiracy to import controlled substances. He is set to return to court on Tuesday, where a trial date is anticipated to be established. If found guilty on all counts, Lopez could face a life sentence.
