Genesis has reimagined the traditional golf buggy as a luxurious, open-sided off-road cruiser powered by four electric motors.

Making its UK debut during the Genesis Scottish Open golf tournament, the Genesis Box Buggy is the creation of the brand’s design head Luc Donckerwolke and his small team of designers from the Korean luxury marque.

The concept was first unveiled at the Le Mans 24 Hours event last month, where it served as a pit-lane shuttle for the Genesis Magma hypercar racing team. Now, returning to its conceptual roots, the Box Buggy made an appearance at the Renaissance Club in Scotland, effortlessly outshining standard golf buggies at the PGA Tour event with its distinctive tartan seats and central touchscreen display.

The Box Buggy comes equipped with advanced technology, including four independent in-wheel electric motors that each generate around 40bhp, bringing the total to more than 200bhp. It also features brake-by-wire and steer-by-wire technology coupled with electronic dampers for enhanced handling and control.

Another standout feature is its ability to rotate its wheels by 90 degrees, a capability made possible by rotating motor units developed by Hyundai Mobis, a sister company under the Hyundai Motor Group. This allows the vehicle to move sideways, making parallel parking and tight-space manoeuvres effortless.

The design of the Box Buggy draws inspiration from the Brubaker Box, a limited-production custom buggy from the 1970s that was based on the Volkswagen Beetle. The Box Buggy’s name pays homage to that iconic model while also referencing the racing term ‘box, box’, which instructs a driver to enter the pit lane.

Genesis has clarified that the Box Buggy is not intended for mass production. Instead, it serves as the latest in a line of bold and imaginative concept vehicles meant to expand the creative and technological boundaries of the Genesis brand beyond its current SUV and sedan lineup.

Recently, Genesis has introduced performance-focused models such as the Magma GT and GT3 supercars, while concepts like the X Skorpio and X Gran Equator showcase the brand’s vision for a future range of rugged, adventure-ready off-road vehicles.
