Thomas Tuchel has expressed strong confidence ahead of England’s high-pressure World Cup semi-final against Argentina, asserting that the Three Lions possess the tactical framework to keep Lionel Messi quiet. The German head coach believes that England’s disciplined defensive display in shutting down Erling Haaland during the quarter-finals proves their ability to neutralise even the most dangerous attackers in the game.

Tuchel draws inspiration from the Haaland plan

Following England’s hard-fought quarter-final victory over Norway, where they managed to keep the prolific Norwegian striker Erling Haaland largely ineffective, Tuchel is convinced that a similar tactical intensity can unsettle Argentina’s legendary number 10.

“It’s incredible how he manages to do it every time – in so many different ways,” Tuchel said while reflecting on the 39-year-old Messi. “He identifies spaces, he creates moments, and what’s remarkable is that the entire team supports his rhythm. We must show courage around him and cut off the supply lines. He’s not the same type of player as Erling Haaland, but since we handled Erling effectively, we’ll find our way this time too.”

Kane warns against Messi fixation

While much of the pre-match conversation in Atlanta has revolved around Messi, who will be making his 206th international appearance, England captain Harry Kane cautioned against focusing solely on the Argentine icon. The Bayern Munich striker reminded his teammates that Argentina, also known as the Albiceleste, are far more than a one-man show.

“He’s been one of, if not the best, players in the world for nearly two decades,” Kane remarked. “Everyone knows how dangerous he can be. But we’re playing Argentina – not just Messi. We’re facing a complete side, a team full of outstanding talent. As much as the build-up will centre on Messi and other big names, we know it’s much more than that. It’s astonishing how long he’s maintained his level and yet never faced England before.”

High stakes for the Three Lions

For Kane, this semi-final marks a defining moment in his career. Set to make his 121st international appearance, surpassing Wayne Rooney as the most-capped outfield player in England’s history, the forward is determined to finally lift a major international trophy after the near misses at the 2018 World Cup and recent European Championships.

“What an occasion – the reigning world champions in a semi-final,” Kane reflected. “I think back to my childhood dreams of playing in matches like these. This is the ultimate stage. I’m thrilled and fully aware of how tough the challenge will be.” Speaking about his milestone, he added, “It’s another special achievement. I’ve surpassed some great names – Beckham with 115 caps and now Rooney at 120. They’re England legends.”

Tuchel senses renewed energy in the camp

England received a major boost with confirmation that Declan Rice is fit to start. The Arsenal midfielder, who was substituted at half-time in the 2-1 win over Norway due to illness, has recovered in time for the Argentina clash. Tuchel believes the positive energy within the squad reflects a team ready to make history.

“This is the time to go for it,” Tuchel stated. “It’s natural to feel emotional before matches like this. What matters is staying focused on what needs to be done. I can sense a shift in the camp – a realisation that we’re close now.” With Messi leading the Golden Boot race on eight goals and both Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham trailing with six each, the semi-final promises to be a thrilling contest for a place in the final against Spain.
