WhatsApp frequently introduces new features to enhance the user experience, and it has now been revealed that the company may soon roll out a new feature for iPhone users. The company is working on a new cloud backup option that could reduce reliance on Apple's iCloud service. It is reported that this feature will allow users to store chat backups on WhatsApp's servers instead of iCloud, while still benefiting from end-to-end encryption security. This function is currently under development and is not yet available for beta testing. Earlier reports had also mentioned that a similar backup option is being prepared for Android users.
**Two Options for iPhone Users**
According to a post by WABetaInfo, a site that tracks WhatsApp development, the upcoming feature has been spotted in iOS beta version 26.28.10.16. The publication states that iPhone users will eventually be able to choose between iCloud and WhatsApp's backup service when configuring chat backups. While iCloud will remain the default option, users will be able to switch to WhatsApp's backup service and revert to iCloud at any time.
**WhatsApp to Offer Free Cloud Storage**
WhatsApp is expected to provide 2GB of free cloud storage for chat backups. This will allow users to reserve their iCloud storage for photos, files, device backups, and other applications. In contrast, Apple offers 5GB of free iCloud storage, which is shared across photos, files, device backups, and apps. Large WhatsApp backups can quickly consume this space, forcing users to delete stored data or purchase a paid iCloud storage plan. The company may also introduce paid storage options for users requiring more cloud storage; alongside a 1TB option, it is testing a 50GB plan that could cost approximately $0.99 (around ₹95) per month.
