Mason Greenwood has officially concluded his two-year spell at Stade Velodrome, beginning a new journey in the Turkish Super Lig with Fenerbahce. The English striker completed his move to Istanbul following an official statement from Marseille detailing their reasons for approving the transfer, bringing an end to his impressive tenure in France.

Marseille explain Greenwood’s exit

Marseille confirmed through an official statement that Greenwood’s move to Fenerbahce is a permanent one. The 24-year-old forward departs southern France after two productive seasons. The club described the transfer as a mutual agreement between both parties following a highly effective individual campaign.

In the statement, the Ligue 1 side expressed their appreciation, saying: “Olympique de Marseille announces the transfer of Mason Greenwood to Fenerbahce. Signed in the summer of 2024, Mason Greenwood wore Marseille’s colours for two seasons. This decision is the result of a joint discussion between the player and the club, who mutually agreed to end their collaboration. Olympique de Marseille thanks Mason Greenwood for his two seasons with the club and wishes him every success in his future career.”

Impressive record on the pitch

Greenwood maintained a consistently strong output in front of goal. During his first season with Marseille, he scored 22 goals and contributed six assists in 36 matches, helping the club secure second place in Ligue 1 and a spot in the Champions League. The following 2025–26 season proved even more fruitful, with Greenwood netting 26 goals and providing 11 assists across 45 appearances in all competitions.

His technical skills and composure made him one of the standout performers in Ligue 1, earning him a nomination among the five finalists for the UNFP Player of the Season award. Despite reports of tensions behind the scenes — including disciplinary concerns and disagreements with former sporting director Medhi Benatia — his influence on the pitch remained undeniable. Marseille chose to finalise his sale while his market value was at its highest.

Lorenzi’s remarks

New Marseille sporting director Grégory Lorenzi addressed Greenwood’s departure during his first press conference on Wednesday, confirming the player’s desire to move on. Lorenzi stated: “I think everyone knows the complexities surrounding the Greenwood deal and the player’s image. There weren’t many options for Mason, but I want to be clear that the player wanted to leave the club as quickly as possible.”

He added: “The figures you hear are from people who don’t have the correct information. All I can confirm is that the club received what it wanted. We expected more clubs to come forward, but ultimately, this was the destination the player was most determined to join.”

Competition for his signature

Greenwood’s move to Turkey reportedly involved considerable drama, particularly with Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s team were believed to be leading the chase for the former Manchester United forward, viewing him as a long-term replacement for Antoine Griezmann. However, negotiations broke down after Atletico reportedly felt “disrespected” due to limited communication from the player’s camp in the final stages of discussions.

Fenerbahce capitalised on the collapse of talks between Greenwood and Atletico Madrid to complete the signing. The Istanbul club confirmed a total transfer fee of €39 million, to be paid to Marseille in equal instalments over three years. The deal represents a major financial investment as Fenerbahce aim to re-establish domestic dominance.

New chapter in Istanbul

Greenwood has signed a four-year contract with Fenerbahce and is expected to become the focal point of their attacking setup. The Englishman expressed his excitement about joining the Turkish giants, praising the club’s stature. In a video message to supporters, he made it clear that accepting the offer required little hesitation.

“It was an easy decision when they showed interest in me,” Greenwood said upon his arrival in Turkey. “It’s the biggest club in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started.” Having already made his mark in Spain with Getafe and in France with Marseille, Greenwood now embarks on his fourth major European adventure, aiming to continue his prolific form in one of world football’s most passionate environments.
