Barcelona president Joan Laporta has lavished praise on Lionel Messi, calling the Argentine legend’s 2026 World Cup campaign “extraordinary”. Speaking in Dallas ahead of the semi-finals, Laporta also shared his assessment of Lamine Yamal and Anthony Gordon’s performances during the tournament.
Messi leading Argentina’s charge once again
At 39, Lionel Messi continues to defy age and expectations at the 2026 World Cup. The Inter Miami forward has led the scoring charts with eight goals in six appearances, inspiring Argentina’s pursuit of another world title. His remarkable consistency has also seen him become the all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 21 goals, underlining his enduring brilliance and elite fitness as he nears the twilight of his career.
Laporta in awe of Messi’s brilliance
Laporta expressed profound admiration for Messi’s influence on Argentina’s campaign across North America. The iconic number 10 has once again been the team’s driving force, propelling the Albiceleste through the knockout stages with the same precision and creativity that defined his era at Barcelona.
Speaking to reporters in Dallas, Laporta said, “Messi’s World Cup is extraordinary. Eight goals, some of them of exceptional quality, and his talent always stands out. Argentina functions around Messi and they play as a compact unit; they are fortunate to have Leo, who always delivers when it matters.”
Yamal and Barcelona’s rising stars
Laporta also celebrated the contributions of current Barcelona players excelling on the global stage, including Spain’s prodigy Lamine Yamal. He emphasised that the success of Blaugrana players at the tournament reflects the strength and pride of the club as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Sharing his thoughts on his young talents, Laporta remarked, “I fully support all Barcelona players participating in the World Cup. Their success is our success, and I believe Lamine is having an outstanding tournament. He’s been named MVP in a couple of matches. The others, like Pedri, Dani Olmo, and Pau Cubarsi, have also played very well.”
Gordon making an impression
Laporta also commended Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle earlier this summer. The English winger has impressed with his creativity for the national team during their journey to the semi-finals.
Reflecting on Gordon’s performances, Laporta added, “I see him doing exceptionally well. The other day against Norway, he provided the assist for one of Bellingham’s goals, and his pass was excellent.”
England are set to face defending champions Argentina in the semi-finals, while Yamal’s Spain will take on France in the other clash.
