Christophe Dugarry has launched a scathing attack on Didier Deschamps and the French national team following their 2-0 semi-final defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup. The ex-Barcelona forward expressed deep frustration and disappointment over what he described as a humiliating performance, saying he felt completely deceived by the side’s lack of attacking intent and fighting spirit during the devastating exit from the tournament.
Dugarry lashes out over World Cup elimination
In the aftermath of France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-final on Tuesday, the team has faced severe backlash. Speaking on the ‘Rothen s’enflamme’ show on RMC, Dugarry did not hold back in his criticism of Deschamps and his players, describing their display as unacceptable for a team of such calibre.
The 1998 World Cup champion was furious with the nature of the loss, insisting that a squad with so much talent should have shown much greater ambition and intensity. Dugarry said, “It’s not just a defeat, it’s not just being knocked out – it’s a humiliation. We knew Spain could beat us, that’s not the issue, but not in this manner. I feel ripped off, scammed, bamboozled, cuckolded…”
‘A disastrous performance on every level’
Dugarry argued that Kylian Mbappe and the rest of the squad completely failed to rise to the occasion. He highlighted the stark difference between the team’s confident pre-match statements and their lifeless display on the field. He continued, “In the end, we delivered a disastrous performance on every level – not a single real chance created. This match reminded me of the first 80 minutes against Argentina in 2022. We claim to be the best and the strongest, yet we produce this kind of performance again. And this time, there was absolutely no reaction.”
Bleak attacking numbers reveal the truth
The match statistics fully support Dugarry’s harsh assessment of France’s offensive struggles against La Roja. France failed to create even one major scoring opportunity, while Spain managed three. Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele were left completely isolated, as France managed only two shots on target during the 90 minutes. The lack of cohesion saw France chasing the game while Spain dictated the pace from start to finish.
Deschamps expected to resign
Didier Deschamps is widely expected to step down after France’s third-place play-off against England, bringing an end to his 14-year tenure as head coach. Having taken charge in July 2012, Deschamps led France to the 2018 World Cup title and the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League triumph. His contract expires at the end of this month, with Zinedine Zidane set to take over and usher in a new chapter for Les Bleus.
