Three-time UEFA Champions League winners Inter Milan have entered discussions to sign Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence, with the English defender reportedly receptive to a surprise move to Italy.
The Nerazzurri have identified Spence as a potential replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who recently joined Real Madrid. As per reports from Fabrizio Romano, Inter have initiated talks with Tottenham regarding a possible deal. The reigning Serie A champions are keen to reinforce their right flank following Dumfries’ departure earlier this month. The 25-year-old Spence is said to be intrigued by the prospect of joining Inter, who are preparing to defend their 21st Scudetto title.
This potential transfer marks a dramatic turnaround for Spence, who once struggled to secure consistent game time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Under Cristian Chivu’s leadership, Inter are seeking players capable of contributing across multiple positions in their quest to retain domestic dominance and push for European success. Spence’s prior loan spell in Italy – where he featured in 16 Serie A matches for Genoa during the second half of the 2023-24 season – adds to his appeal as a low-risk, high-upside option for the Milan club’s management.
Spence’s resurgence has also been reflected on the international stage. His performances at the World Cup have elevated his reputation to new heights. Despite initial doubts over his inclusion in England’s squad, Spence has become an integral part of Thomas Tuchel’s side. Playing through injury with a protective mask following a broken jaw sustained in May, he was instrumental in England’s quarter-final victory over Norway.
His impressive display as a substitute has now put him in contention for a starting spot in the upcoming semi-final against Argentina. Throughout the tournament, Spence has showcased the same pace and attacking intent that defined his breakout spell with Nottingham Forest. Having previously excelled on loan from Middlesbrough, helping Forest earn promotion to the Premier League as 2021-22 Championship play-off winners, he has since gone on to make 30 Premier League appearances for Spurs, solidifying his credentials at the top level.
A potential move to Inter would add another chapter to what has been a varied but ultimately rewarding career path. Since signing for Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022, Spence has made 85 appearances for the North London club. However, loan spells at Rennes, Leeds United, and Genoa were essential in his development before he established himself as a dependable Premier League performer. Now with 13 international caps and a World Cup semi-final within reach, Spence has evolved from a promising young talent into a seasoned defender ready for a new challenge.
Should the switch to San Siro be completed, Spence would gain the opportunity to regularly feature in the UEFA Champions League and compete for major trophies. For Tottenham, the transfer could represent a timely opportunity to capitalise on his rising market value, while Inter would secure a versatile and experienced addition to their backline.
Inter’s pursuit of Spence also aligns with their tactical ambitions. The London-born defender, whose current Tottenham contract runs until 2029 with an option for an additional year, offers the flexibility to operate not only as a right-back but also on the left or in more advanced roles. This adaptability makes him a suitable fit for Inter’s evolving system under Chivu. As both clubs explore the terms of a potential deal, Spence’s next career move could prove pivotal for his continued growth and Inter’s ambitions in Italy and Europe.
