Lionel Scaloni and Emiliano Martinez were outspoken in their criticism of England’s approach following Argentina’s dramatic World Cup semi-final victory, as the Albiceleste overturned a deficit to win 2-1. The Argentina head coach said his team “sensed weakness and seized the opportunity.”
England’s hopes of ending six decades of disappointment were dashed in Atlanta, where they fell to a 2-1 defeat despite taking the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon.
England manager Thomas Tuchel adopted a highly defensive setup after the second-half hydration break, a move that allowed Argentina to dominate possession. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez capitalised to score the equaliser before Lautaro Martinez sealed the win with a decisive header.
Argentina will now take on Spain in Sunday’s final in New Jersey, aiming to become only the third team in history to win consecutive World Cups.
Speaking after the game, Scaloni said he believed England were “doubting themselves” towards the end of what was a scrappy, foul-ridden encounter that struggled for rhythm.
“We were under some pressure, but our opponents began to hesitate,” Scaloni explained in his post-match press conference. “We all felt it — we sensed weakness and went for it.”
He added, “There was a gap inside England’s defence. The ball went in after striking the post twice. After England scored, we showed the essence of our football — it’s more than just tactics or style.”
Reflecting on leading Argentina to yet another World Cup final, Scaloni said, “I’m at a loss for words. It’s an immense joy for our country and our people. This group continues to amaze me; they never give up no matter the situation.”
He continued, “What these players have given is extraordinary. People might not fully understand the effort involved — it’s truly remarkable. We are unique, and that’s not arrogance; it’s heart. The support from our fans today made a huge difference — we owe this win to them.”
“Wearing this shirt demands that we give everything until the very last moment. There’s no holding back,” Scaloni concluded.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez criticised England’s decision to retreat after taking the lead. “We felt it — they kept moving backwards and backwards instead of pushing forward,” he said.
“When you’re ahead, you still have to attack. You can’t abandon your plan. I think they did that and brought on extra defenders,” he added.
Looking ahead to the final against reigning European champions Spain, Martinez said, “It’s a special feeling. Winning it would mean everything — for my country, my family, and my teammates.”
He concluded, “Reaching back-to-back World Cup finals shows that we’ve been doing things the right way. I’m incredibly proud of everyone, especially my family.”
