Liverpool are on the verge of finalising a new long-term contract with Dominik Szoboszlai, following an outline agreement reached with the Hungarian midfielder. Since his arrival from RB Leipzig, Szoboszlai has emerged as one of Liverpool’s standout performers and is expected to continue playing a pivotal role under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool move to secure Szoboszlai’s future

The Reds are preparing to secure Szoboszlai’s long-term commitment by offering him a new extended deal. As reported by The Athletic, an agreement in principle has been reached after months of discussions between Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes and the player’s representatives.

Although Szoboszlai still has two years left on his current contract, the club prioritised an extension because of his consistent displays in the Premier League. The deal not only ends speculation surrounding his future but also gives Andoni Iraola an early boost as he begins his first season in charge.

Since joining from RB Leipzig in a £60 million transfer in 2023, the 25-year-old midfielder has become a vital part of the squad. He played a key role in helping Liverpool lift the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season and continued to impress individually during a challenging 2025-26 campaign.

Szoboszlai reiterates his commitment to Liverpool

During Liverpool’s Merseyside derby victory against Everton in April, Szoboszlai spoke briefly about his future while contract talks were still ongoing. Although he admitted that there had been no major progress at that time, he made it clear that he wanted to remain at Anfield.

“There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation,” he told reporters. “As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see. Of course I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy.”

A cornerstone for Liverpool’s new era

Tying Szoboszlai down to a new long-term deal provides Liverpool with a strong foundation as the club embarks on a new era under Iraola. Securing one of their most influential players helps stabilise the squad during what is likely to be a summer of change.

The Hungarian international’s versatility has been one of his biggest assets, as he has successfully operated as a No. 10, winger, deep-lying midfielder, and even as a right-back when needed. Last season, Szoboszlai delivered 13 goals and 12 assists in 53 matches across all competitions, becoming the first Liverpool midfielder since Steven Gerrard in the 2013-14 season to record double figures in both goals and assists.

What comes next?

With the agreement nearly finalised, Szoboszlai is expected to be part of Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the United States. His full availability will give Iraola valuable time to integrate him into his tactical setup. As Liverpool gear up for the upcoming campaign, resolving Szoboszlai’s contract situation allows both the player and the club to concentrate on reclaiming their place among the elite of English and European football.
