Enzo Fernandez has once again found himself at the centre of controversy after seemingly mocking England on social media following Argentina’s thrilling World Cup semi-final victory. The Chelsea midfielder’s celebrations and online behaviour have drawn sharp criticism from England supporters, forcing his club into an awkward retreat.

Fernandez appeared to take a dig at England by posting a photo of himself with Argentina teammates Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes on Instagram, accompanied by the Oasis track ‘Wonderwall’. The song had become an unofficial anthem for England’s World Cup campaign in North America, with Harry Kane and the rest of the squad often leading fans in singing it during their run to the semi-finals.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, many interpreted Fernandez’s song choice as a deliberate jab at the defeated England team. Although he later reposted the image without the music, the message had already hit home among English supporters still hurting from their 2-1 loss on Wednesday night. The 25-year-old could now face a hostile reception when he returns to Premier League action, assuming he remains at Stamford Bridge.

The online post came after a string of provocative moments from Fernandez during the match itself. After scoring an 85th-minute equaliser, he sprinted towards the England bench and fans to celebrate, cupping his ears, sticking out his tongue, and blowing a kiss towards the crestfallen Three Lions supporters.

The controversy extended beyond the pitch as Chelsea’s own social media team faced backlash for sharing a celebratory image of Fernandez on X with an explosion emoji. The reaction from fans was so fierce that the club was forced to delete the post shortly afterwards.

These antics come at a delicate time for Fernandez, whose future at Chelsea remains uncertain. The midfielder has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid and was handed an internal two-match suspension in April after publicly expressing his interest in living in Spain. Although new manager Xabi Alonso has publicly stated his desire to keep Fernandez, the episode could further strain his relationship with Chelsea’s English players.

Meanwhile, England fans have continued to express frustration over several incidents from the match, including claims that Lionel Messi committed a foul in the build-up to Argentina’s winner and that Fernandez should have been sent off for an earlier elbow. For many supporters, the ‘Wonderwall’ post was the final provocation, prompting warnings on social media about the midfielder’s eventual return to training at Cobham.

With emotions still running high, Argentina’s focus now shifts to Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain in New Jersey. Lionel Messi and his teammates will be looking to secure back-to-back world titles, while Spain aim to capture their second World Cup after defeating France in their semi-final.
