The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday (July 17) arrested an assistant engineer of Jammu and Kashmir Public Works Department (PWD). The agency arrested the engineer red handed while taking a bribe of Rs 30 thousand. This action of CBI created a stir in the department.
According to the information, the engineer is accused of demanding money in exchange for passing the compensation amount for the damaged house under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). CBI spokesperson said that the accused was associated with the works going on under PMGSY in Doda district and was posted as Assistant Engineer in PWD.
According to the CBI, in the complaint filed on July 16, 2026, it was alleged that the complainant's house was damaged during the construction of Thathri to Kathawa PMGSY road project in Doda district. In return he was to get a compensation of about Rs 10 lakh. The complainant had been trying to get compensation for a long time.
It is alleged that the Assistant Engineer made a deal with him to forward the compensation file and get the payment released. The engineer demanded a bribe of Rs 50 thousand from the complainant. But he was not ready to pay that much amount. After this there was a conversation between the two and after the conversation the deal was finalized for Rs 30 thousand. The engineer reduced the bribe amount. After this CBI took action against the accused.
After investigating the complaint, CBI laid a trap on July 16 and arrested the accused assistant engineer red handed while taking a bribe of Rs 30,000. CBI spokesperson said that after the arrest, the accused assistant engineer is being interrogated. At present, CBI has registered a case against the accused and started further investigation.
