Aston Villa have officially confirmed the acquisition of Johan Manzambi from Bundesliga club SC Freiburg on Friday, 17 July.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who recently represented Switzerland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joins the Premier League side on a permanent deal from SC Freiburg.
Regarded as one of the most promising young talents in European football, Manzambi played a pivotal role in the Breisgau club’s impressive run to the UEFA Europa League final last season.
Although Freiburg eventually lost to Aston Villa in the final, the highly creative midfielder was honoured as the Europa League’s Young Player of the Season for his outstanding performances throughout the campaign.
“The shared journey from the U-19s to reaching the Europa League final was something truly special for both Johan and us,” said Freiburg’s sporting director Jochen Saier.
He added, “After a series of very intensive discussions and negotiations in recent weeks, we believe that both sides have arrived at a solution that benefits everyone involved.”
The transfer fee, reportedly €70 million, marks a new record sale for SC Freiburg, surpassing the previous club record of €25 million each received for Kevin Schade and Merlin Röhl.
Manzambi’s move to Villa Park represents a significant statement of intent from Aston Villa, who continue to strengthen their squad following their success in European competition last season.
