The 2026 FIFA World Cup is entering its decisive phase, with just four teams remaining in contention for the most prestigious trophy in world football. While collective triumph is every player's dream, a few individuals have also made strong claims to be named the standout performer of the tournament. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe currently lead the conversation, but the competition is fierce as the semi-finals approach.

The revered Golden Ball award represents far more than just goals. Chosen by accredited media representatives, it recognises players for their overall excellence, influence, and consistency throughout the tournament.

Although forwards have frequently claimed the honour, several midfielders and even a goalkeeper have also lifted the award. Past recipients include Paolo Rossi, Diego Maradona, Salvatore Schillaci, Romario, Ronaldo, Oliver Kahn, Zinedine Zidane, and Diego Forlan. Among current stars, Lionel Messi and Luka Modric have also been previous winners.

Messi, the only player to have collected the Golden Ball twice – in 2014 and 2022 – is looking to clinch it again and become the first footballer to win it in consecutive tournaments. However, competition comes from 2022 runner-up Kylian Mbappe, Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele, Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal, and England captain Harry Kane, all of whom are determined to leave their mark.

With the semi-finals now upon us, the race for the Golden Ball is intensifying. Here are GOAL’s updated World Cup 2026 Golden Ball Power Rankings, tracking the key contenders for the award.

10. Lamine Yamal | Spain

It may seem that Yamal hasn’t completely lived up to the expectations at this World Cup, though that’s largely because those expectations were extraordinarily high. The Barcelona youngster celebrated his 19th birthday during the tournament and had been nursing an injury that halted his club season.

That he is already viewed as an indispensable figure for both Barcelona and Spain speaks volumes about his accomplishments at such a young age. Yamal is arguably one of the finest teenage talents in football history, boasting three La Liga titles, a European Championship winners’ medal, and a Ballon d’Or runner-up finish. Though he has gradually regained his sharpness this summer, Spain continue to rely on his creativity to break down opponents.

Yamal was electrifying in Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, scoring the opener and dazzling defenders with his dribbling. While he didn’t score in the next four matches, his influence remained strong, especially in the quarter-final against Belgium, where he recorded 80 touches, four successful dribbles, six shots, and nine ground duels won.

9. Ismael Saibari | Morocco

Bayern Munich will feel fortunate to have finalised a €50 million deal for Ismael Saibari from PSV before the World Cup started. The Moroccan midfielder’s performances have surely increased his value after a remarkable tournament.

The 25-year-old was pivotal for Morocco, scoring the opener against Brazil with a powerful strike, inspiring a fast start against Scotland, and equalising twice against Haiti to lead his team to victory. He also converted the decisive penalty in the shootout win over the Netherlands in the round of 16.

Though Morocco eventually exited after a quarter-final defeat to France, Saibari’s technical brilliance and athleticism made him one of the breakout stars of the competition.

8. Mikel Oyarzabal | Spain

Mikel Oyarzabal has emerged as Spain’s surprise hero in the 2026 World Cup, scoring four goals in six games. The Real Sociedad forward’s impeccable timing and finishing were crucial, particularly when he netted twice in the 3-0 round of 32 victory over Austria.

While his performances may have surprised some international observers, La Liga fans are well aware of his quality. Oyarzabal had scored six times during World Cup qualification and 15 goals in 34 league appearances last season, form that has earned him interest from Barcelona.

Though he didn’t score in the knockout stage wins over Portugal and Belgium, his constant attacking threat has made him a vital component of Luis de la Fuente’s side after Yamal.

7. Ousmane Dembele | France

Having won consecutive Champions League titles with Paris Saint-Germain and a Ballon d’Or, Ousmane Dembele is shining once again on the international stage. The French forward had never previously scored in a World Cup, but he broke that streak with a goal in France’s 3-0 win over Iraq.

He then produced a first-half hat-trick against Norway, helping Les Bleus cruise into the knockouts. In the last-32 clash against Sweden, he set up Mbappe for his first goal, and continued to threaten defences with his movement and flair. Dembele’s solo strike in the 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco, where he ran from the halfway line before finishing clinically, was one of the goals of the tournament.

6. Erling Haaland | Norway

Erling Haaland’s debut World Cup has been nothing short of sensational. His standout moment came in Norway’s shock 2-1 victory over Brazil in the round of 16, where he scored twice, including a towering header and a composed finish.

From the very first match, Haaland showcased his lethal instincts, scoring within 30 minutes of the opener against Iraq and adding another before half-time. He finished that game with two goals as Norway triumphed 4-1, earning the Man of the Match award. He then scored twice more against Senegal and delivered the decisive goal versus Ivory Coast to help Norway reach the quarter-finals, where they eventually fell to England. Even in defeat, Haaland’s performances ensured his name remains in the Golden Ball discussion.

5. Michael Olise | France

While Harry Kane grabbed the headlines at Bayern Munich last season, it was Michael Olise’s dazzling form that won hearts. The Bundesliga Player of the Year registered 20 goals and 25 assists across all competitions, helping Bayern reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Similarly, in the France camp, while Mbappe dominates the goal charts, Olise has been instrumental in creating chances. His precise pass set up Mbappe’s opener against Senegal in France’s first match, earning Olise FIFA’s Player of the Match award in a 3-1 win. With five assists so far – two for Mbappe, and one each for Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola – Olise leads the tournament’s assist tally.

4. Harry Kane | England

Having scored an incredible 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern Munich last season, Golden Shoe winner Harry Kane has carried that form into the World Cup. Often criticised for not delivering in major tournaments, Kane has silenced doubters this time.

He struck twice against Croatia in a 4-2 win, scored against Panama, and produced two late goals to rescue England from elimination against DR Congo in the last-32. Facing Mexico at the Azteca in the next round, Kane again delivered — assisting Jude Bellingham and then converting a penalty to secure a 3-1 win. His leadership and composure have been central to England’s deep run.

3. Jude Bellingham | England

Jude Bellingham continues to prove himself as England’s talisman, silencing critics who questioned his starting role under Thomas Tuchel. The Real Madrid star scored in the opener against Croatia and again against Panama to help England top their group.

In the round of 16 clash with Mexico, Bellingham was outstanding, scoring twice to lead England to a 3-2 victory. He then repeated the feat in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway, prompting Gary Lineker to suggest that the 23-year-old could go down as England’s greatest-ever player.

2. Lionel Messi | Argentina

At 39, Lionel Messi continues to redefine greatness. The Argentine legend, already a two-time Golden Ball winner, started his 2026 campaign with a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Algeria, equalling the all-time World Cup scoring record with 16 goals.

He then set a new record with a brace against Austria, followed by a stunning free-kick off the bench against Jordan, making him the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches. Messi struck again in the dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Cape Verde before missing a penalty in the last-16 tie against Egypt. Despite that, he equalised later in the match, though Argentina eventually lost to a stoppage-time goal.

1. Kylian Mbappe | France

By the start of the 2026 World Cup, Kylian Mbappe had already achieved legendary status, matching Brazilian great Pele’s record of 12 goals in 14 World Cup games. Determined to surpass him, Mbappe began this tournament in sensational style, scoring twice in France’s 3-1 victory in their opening match in the United States.

He added another double against Iraq, provided two assists against Norway, and continued to dominate in the knockout rounds. Mbappe scored twice against Sweden in the round of 32, converted a penalty against Paraguay, and curled home a stunning strike in the 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco. The French captain’s combination of speed, precision, and leadership has made him the frontrunner for the 2026 Golden Ball.
