On Wednesday, a consortium consisting of Toyota, BMW, Repsol, and Bosch revealed the commencement of a new pilot project in Spain. The initiative aims to demonstrate how existing vehicles can practically operate using only renewable fuel. The six-month-long program is designed to gather concrete data proving that renewable fuels can significantly contribute to the decarbonisation of Europe’s transportation sector.
Launched in early July, the project revolves around a fleet of 20 vehicles from Toyota and BMW. These cars are largely identical to their standard production models and will rely exclusively on the existing renewable fuel infrastructure throughout the test period. Repsol plays a crucial role in this effort, as it is currently the only company in Spain providing 100 percent renewable petrol at its stations through the Nexa 95 blend.
The renewable fuel is produced from RED-compliant feedstocks, including used cooking oil and tallow, leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. According to the project partners, this blend is fully compatible with fuel systems in existing vehicles. Bosch’s advanced digital fuel tracking technology will be employed to certify and validate the test results, ensuring accuracy and transparency in measuring the renewable fuel’s performance.
“Technology openness is a fundamental pillar of the BMW Group’s strategy. At the same time, our objective is always to have more environmentally friendly and efficient vehicles on the road,” said Stefan Heller, head of development for BMW’s VEEF programme. “Our BMW and Mini cars participating in this forward-looking pilot will help gather valuable data, enabling us to offer our global customers the best and most efficient powertrains in the future.”
Although the final results of the study will take time to emerge, the concept is one that automotive enthusiasts are likely to welcome. Europe continues to move toward reducing its reliance on petroleum-based fuels, while stringent emissions regulations worldwide are challenging automakers to innovate beyond electrification alone. For those who wish to see petrol-powered performance cars from iconic brands such as Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, and Lamborghini remain on the roads, Repsol’s renewable fuel trials could represent a major breakthrough. The fact that such fuels can function in existing vehicles without extensive engine modifications makes the development even more promising.
