India Post issued an official notification on Thursday (July 16). According to this, India Post has authorized the refund of postage fees for bookings made either online or at the counter if they are cancelled. This means that if you cancel a booking made via the Post Office's online portal or at the counter, you will receive a refund. However, this process is subject to certain conditions.

According to the India Post notification, individuals who book postal items themselves via the web portal or mobile app can cancel the booking and claim a postage refund before the item is accepted by the Post Office.

**Rules regarding refunds**
The notification states, "In the case of items booked at a Post Office counter, the sender may request the Post Office to cancel the booking, or the Post Office may cancel the booking on the same day due to incorrect data entry." Refunds for postage upon cancellation will be processed in accordance with administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts from time to time.

The new rules also mandate that in the event of service suspension—as per administrative instructions issued periodically—postage, special fees, and air surcharges must be refunded to the sender.

**Recall of international bookings**
The notified rules allow the sender of an accountable outbound international postal item to recall the item from the booking office for any reason, subject to instructions issued by the administration.

The rules also allow the addressee of an accountable inbound international postal item to redirect the item from the delivery office upon payment of the applicable fee. However, no fee will be charged if the new address falls within the delivery area of the same Post Office.

Additionally, the new rules permit senders of international items to recall or redirect items from foreign destinations, subject to the policies of the respective postal administration and administrative instructions in force at the time.
