Lionel Scaloni has hailed Lionel Messi as the finest footballer of all time after guiding Argentina to another World Cup final. The coach urged fans to treasure every moment of Messi’s extraordinary career as the reigning world champions prepare to face Spain in the much-anticipated final on Sunday.

Scaloni celebrates Messi after Argentina reach the final

Following Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England in the semi-final, Scaloni offered heartfelt praise for his captain. Sitting beside Messi during the post-match conference, the Argentina manager reflected on the veteran star’s lasting impact on the sport and described him as a true legend of football. Scaloni noted that Messi’s performances at 39 continue to defy age and expectations. The Inter Miami forward, who has already led Argentina to a World Cup triumph and back-to-back Copa America titles, now has a chance to help the Albiceleste defend their world crown against Spain.

Scaloni urges fans to cherish Messi’s career

Scaloni encouraged supporters to savour Messi’s brilliance while they still can. He emphasised that the captain’s consistency and longevity make his achievements even more exceptional.

“He has made history. He is a legend,” Scaloni told reporters. “It fills me with pride because he is the best player in the history of football. To reach another final in the way he has, at the age of 39, is simply incredible.

“That’s why I said we must enjoy him while he’s still playing, because we saw what happened with Diego [Maradona] and how much we miss him. We still have Leo, and we must appreciate that. He is a historic figure and a legend, just like all these players who have given us such glorious years.”

Argentina’s golden generation marches on

Scaloni also lauded the entire squad for building one of the most successful eras in Argentina’s history. Since ending a 28-year drought for a major trophy by lifting the 2021 Copa America, the Albiceleste have cemented their status as one of the world’s elite sides.

“They have achieved things that seemed impossible only a few years ago,” Scaloni added. “It hasn’t been easy to reach this level and maintain it over so many years. We might win, and I hope we do, but regardless, the journey to this point has been truly remarkable.”

A massive challenge awaits against Spain

Argentina will meet Spain at MetLife Stadium, aiming to become the first team in over six decades to defend the World Cup title successfully. Messi will undoubtedly play a pivotal role as Argentina chase yet another piece of football history.
