Romelu Lukaku appears poised for a new chapter in his career, with Major League Soccer (MLS) emerging as a serious destination alongside interest from Ajax, Monaco, and Fenerbahce. Napoli are reportedly ready to part ways with the Belgian striker as they aim to reduce their wage bill, though any potential transfer will hinge on clubs meeting the financial demands of a permanent deal.

MLS joins the chase for Lukaku

According to reports from Tuttosport, MLS may offer Lukaku an opportunity outside Europe, with New York City FC identifying the Belgian international as a possible marquee signing. His performances at the World Cup have further enhanced his global appeal, prompting interest from across the Atlantic.

Napoli, under the management of Massimiliano Allegri, are open to offloading Lukaku to ease their financial burden and strengthen the squad with new signings. The forward is currently on vacation following his international duties, while his representatives evaluate interest from several clubs. While European teams remain in contention, increasing attention from the United States has added an intriguing twist to the transfer race.

No official bids yet

At present, no club has submitted a formal offer for Lukaku. Both Ajax and Monaco have made initial approaches, but discussions have not yet advanced to the negotiation stage. Any move is expected to depend on Lukaku agreeing to lower his personal terms, as his current salary at Napoli is estimated at around €12 million gross per year.

Fenerbahce are also monitoring developments, though their recent acquisition of Mason Greenwood could limit their capacity to pursue another high-profile attacking option. Meanwhile, speculation linking Besiktas with Lukaku has cooled in recent days.

Napoli seek a permanent transfer

Napoli are eager to finalise a permanent deal for Lukaku to free up funds for further reinforcements and avoid a prolonged transfer saga before the start of the new Serie A campaign. Despite continued interest in the striker across Europe, his high wages remain a stumbling block. Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis reportedly remains firm on the club’s valuation, even though the priority is to move the player’s salary off their books. According to Il Mattino, Lukaku’s stay in Naples looks increasingly unlikely unless he accepts a pay cut or convinces Allegri that he deserves a key role in the squad.

Decision on Lukaku’s future imminent

Napoli have already commenced pre-season training without Lukaku’s presence, signalling that an exit could be imminent. Should a suitable offer arrive from MLS or one of his European suitors, the Italian club is expected to sanction the move. The final decision now rests with Lukaku, who must choose between continuing his career in Europe or embarking on a new adventure in the United States.
