England will take on France at Miami Stadium on Saturday evening in the World Cup third-place playoff, aiming to secure their best result at the tournament since lifting the trophy in 1966.

The 2–1 loss to Argentina in Atlanta was a bitter blow. Anthony Gordon had given England the lead, but Argentina struck twice late on through Enzo Fernández in the 82nd minute and Lautaro Martínez in stoppage time, both goals assisted by Lionel Messi. Head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that “none of these players want to play this match,” but stressed that they will handle the occasion with professionalism. Saturday’s fixture offers a chance to wrap up the campaign with a win and claim a first-ever World Cup bronze medal for England.

Reece James will miss the game due to the muscle injury he picked up against Argentina, while Jordan Henderson remains unavailable with a broken wrist. Jude Bellingham’s participation was under review following an incident with Argentina’s Valentín Barco after the final whistle, but with no disciplinary action from FIFA, the midfielder is expected to feature.

Tuchel is set to make several changes to his side. Declan Rice is likely to be given a rest, as the Arsenal midfielder has been managing physical issues throughout the tournament and with the club season approaching, his workload will be monitored. Jarell Quansah returns from suspension and is tipped to start at right-back, with Djed Spence moving across to left-back.

Bukayo Saka is also expected to sit out the match due to an Achilles concern. Bellingham is likely to drop deeper into midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, while Morgan Rogers will operate in the number ten role. Noni Madueke is set to start on the right flank, with Anthony Gordon occupying the left wing.

Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham both have six goals each in the tournament, sitting two behind Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot standings — with goals in this match still counting towards the final tally. Youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who has yet to feature this tournament, is expected to make an appearance from the bench.

England predicted starting XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Quansah, Konsa, Guehi, Spence; Bellingham, Anderson; Madueke, Rogers, Gordon; Kane.

The match will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom.
