Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez is set to travel to the United States to cheer for Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, despite being sidelined from the tournament due to injury.

This touching gesture has been initiated by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which seeks to honour players who played key roles in Spain’s qualification journey.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Fermin will be present at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for Sunday’s final clash against Argentina. The RFEF extended an invitation to him, even though he was ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

The 23-year-old midfielder was an integral part of Luis de la Fuente’s plans before his unfortunate injury during a 2025/26 season match against Real Betis, making his absence one of the most significant blows to Spain’s World Cup hopes.

Although unable to take the field, the Barcelona player will now have the opportunity to support his teammates from the stands as they aim to capture the world title.

Fermin’s injury dashed his World Cup dream before the tournament began, but he has remained closely linked with the national side throughout the competition.

According to the report, Fermin will travel to the United States with Alvaro Morata, and the duo will join the Spanish delegation before the final showdown with Argentina.

The Barcelona midfielder will be reunited with several of his club teammates who have been instrumental in Spain’s path to the final, including Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal.

The RFEF’s invitation forms part of a broader initiative to recognise the contributions of all players involved in Spain’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Alongside Fermin and Morata, several players who featured in the qualifiers but did not make the final squad have also been invited to New Jersey. This group includes Alex Remiro, Aleix Garcia, Daniel Vivian, Pablo Fornals, Pablo Barrios, Samu Omorodion, Robin Le Normand, and Jesus Rodriguez.

In addition, the federation plans to host members of Spain’s legendary 2010 World Cup-winning team, creating a symbolic bridge between the nation’s only previous world champions and the current squad seeking to reclaim the trophy.

On that note, Spanish and Barcelona legends such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, and Pepe Reina are all expected to attend the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
