Bringing in a new central defender is reportedly not among Manchester United’s top priorities during this summer transfer window.
In April, United extended Harry Maguire’s contract by one year, ensuring the experienced English centre-back would not leave as a free agent.
As a result, the Red Devils entered the summer market focused primarily on reinforcing their midfield, planning to allocate the majority of their funds toward that area. Nevertheless, a more budget-friendly defensive option has now caught their attention.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Manchester United have shown interest in Leicester City defender Ben Nelson.
It is understood that Serie A club Torino, Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, and recently relegated West Ham United are also keen to secure Nelson’s signature.
Both Torino and Gladbach are said to have had their “offers rejected for the 22-year-old left-footed centre-back, who has just 12 months remaining on his contract.”
Furthermore, it has been reported that Nelson has informed Leicester City of his intention to leave the club.
The Foxes are believed to be demanding £10 million for the 6ft 5in defender, who is also capable of playing at left-back. However, this asking price from the League One side is said to have “put off potential buyers.”
The young English defender has earned six caps for England’s under-20 team. Last season, he featured 27 times for Leicester City, contributing two goal involvements.
Manchester United are also targeting a promising and cost-effective attacking option.
Earlier today, reports indicated that United are in negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over a transfer fee for winger Tynan Thompson.
The 18-year-old, known for his “incredibly quick feet,” is an exciting left-winger who has yet to make his senior debut. However, with his considerable potential, that opportunity could come soon — and at present, it appears more likely to arrive at Old Trafford rather than in North London.
