Chelsea have successfully outmanoeuvred Arsenal in the race to sign Morgan Rogers, agreeing to a record-breaking £117 million transfer with Aston Villa. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has chosen Stamford Bridge over the Emirates Stadium after being persuaded by the vision presented by new head coach Xabi Alonso.
British transfer record shattered at Stamford Bridge
As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea have made a significant statement in the transfer market by striking a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for Rogers. Valued at £117 million, the deal will make the England international the most expensive player in the club’s history. The fee surpasses the previous British record of £116 million that Manchester City agreed to pay for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, as well as the £106 million Chelsea spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
All personal terms have been finalised for Rogers, who is set to sign a long-term contract running until 2032, with an option to extend by another year. This ensures the midfielder will remain central to Chelsea’s project for the next decade. A medical has been scheduled for Monday, with only final administrative procedures pending before the official announcement.
Arsenal miss out as Alonso’s influence proves decisive
The pursuit of Rogers became one of the fiercest transfer battles of the summer, with Arsenal showing strong interest in securing his services. However, Rogers ultimately opted for a move to West London, crediting his decision to the opportunity to work under Xabi Alonso. The former Bayer Leverkusen manager played a crucial role in convincing Rogers of Chelsea’s long-term sporting vision, helping the Blues triumph over several other Premier League and European giants keen on the midfielder.
Rogers departs Aston Villa as a fully established star, having netted 31 goals and provided 29 assists in 125 appearances. His journey has been remarkable since joining Villa from Middlesbrough for £7 million in early 2024. Middlesbrough will also benefit financially from this transfer thanks to a 20 per cent sell-on clause. Rogers’ exit follows a standout 2025–26 season, during which he led Villa to a Europa League triumph and secured Champions League qualification, contributing 14 goals and 12 assists.
England star shines at the World Cup
Currently representing England at the World Cup, Rogers has been one of the Three Lions’ standout performers. He has featured in all six matches so far, including starts against Panama and Argentina, and delivered the crucial cross that set up Anthony Gordon’s goal in England’s semi-final clash. He is also expected to start in the third-place play-off against France. Once his international duties conclude, Rogers will return to complete his record-setting move to Stamford Bridge.
Aston Villa plan for post-Rogers era
Although losing a player of Rogers’ quality is a significant setback for Unai Emery’s side, Aston Villa are already preparing to reinvest the funds generated from the sale. The club, which had been holding out for offers exceeding £100 million, anticipated such a bid this summer given Rogers’ stellar form. Villa have already spent over £50 million to bring in Johan Manzambi and secured a £35 million deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. Additionally, Emery’s recruitment team is eyeing players such as Crysencio Summerville and Ibrahim Mbaye to strengthen their attacking depth ahead of their Champions League campaign.
