David Beckham faced an unexpected moment of hostility when members of a live audience booed him during a public appearance. The former England captain found himself the target of frustration while discussing the upcoming FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.

Beckham keeps it neutral in New York

In a rare instance of tension for one of football’s most admired personalities, Beckham was jeered by fans at the Fanatics Fest in New York. While speaking about his dilemma in choosing between the two finalists, the 51-year-old highlighted his strong ties to both nations. Beckham spent several successful years in La Liga with Real Madrid and has since built a close personal and professional relationship with Argentina’s star player Lionel Messi, whom he helped bring to Major League Soccer (MLS).

“I’m going to sit on the fence. I don’t know who’s going to win. I want Lionel to do incredibly well because he’s an exceptional person and player. But Spain are going to be tough to play against. I’m not going to say who I think is going to win. I’m just going to sit on the fence and enjoy the game,” Beckham said.

A diplomatic defence of his neutral view

Taking the crowd’s reaction sportingly, Beckham laughed off the jeers but admitted that it felt strange to be on the receiving end of such criticism. The audience had hoped he would name a favourite, but Beckham refused to take sides. “I haven’t been booed for a while. I wasn’t expecting it here,” he remarked.

He further explained his connection to both teams, saying, “I played in Spain, so I have a huge affection for Spain as a country and obviously for their football team. I think they’ve done an exceptional job this World Cup and they deserve to be in the final.”

“With Argentina, they have Lionel. He’s an exceptional player, an exceptional person with the right values, and he treats everyone the way they should be treated,” Beckham added.

Heartbreak after England’s World Cup exit

Beckham’s neutrality came shortly after he was visibly emotional following England’s elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Argentina. Viral clips showed the football legend looking heartbroken in the stands, his head bowed as he appeared to fight back tears while the Three Lions fell short in the semi-final.

Despite the disappointment, Beckham maintained his composure and expressed his pride for the team’s effort on social media. Writing to his millions of followers, he said: “Heartbreak for us all but memories that inspire and last forever… Thank you to our team, our fans & our country for what you have given us in this World Cup.”
