Pep Guardiola has reportedly been offered the opportunity to take charge of the Italy national football team following a personal meeting with Paolo Maldini and Leonardo in Barcelona. Despite the offer, the former Manchester City manager has made it clear that he is currently enjoying his sabbatical and has no immediate plans to return to the touchline.

Italy have identified Guardiola as their leading candidate for the vacant position. Maldini and Leonardo are believed to have travelled to Barcelona to hold discussions with the Spanish tactician regarding the role. As per reports from Sky Sports Italia, the conversation lasted far longer than a brief encounter and may have extended into the weekend.

News of the meeting surfaced after images of Maldini and Leonardo in Spain began circulating online, fuelling speculation that they were there to formally propose the managerial position to Guardiola. Within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Guardiola is said to be viewed as the top choice to spearhead the Azzurri's next chapter.

However, the main challenge for the FIGC lies in Guardiola’s firm commitment to his ongoing break from coaching. The 55-year-old has repeatedly emphasised his desire to take time away from football, stating, “From a mental standpoint, I don’t miss anything at all. I started managing at 37, and my entire life has been connected to football. Now, I want to experience life, to find happiness in things that have nothing to do with football.”

He further explained, “I’m trying to figure out what my life will look like. I decided to stop because I want to take better care of myself. I’d like to spend more time with my children and my father, who is 95 and still with us. I’m now 56, no longer young, and your perspective changes with age. I’m still adjusting to this new stage of life, but it’s going quite well.”

While Guardiola remains the FIGC’s dream appointment, Italian officials are also considering alternative options. Former national team boss Roberto Mancini and Juventus icon Andrea Pirlo have both been mentioned in connection with the job, although recent reports indicate that Antonio Conte may have already reached an agreement to take over as head coach.

Interest in Guardiola extends beyond Italy. Several major footballing nations are monitoring his situation closely. In the wake of England’s recent World Cup disappointment, pundits and ex-players have even suggested that Guardiola could be a contender to succeed Thomas Tuchel as the Three Lions’ manager.

Italy are currently seeking a new leader to rejuvenate the team following Gennaro Gattuso’s departure, which came after their failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
