A consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, who previously served as co-owner of Queens Park Rangers (QPR), has shown interest in purchasing a minority share in Liverpool Football Club.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool FC, have confirmed that they were approached regarding a potential minority investment.

This move comes soon after Bhatia’s departure from the QPR board, marking the end of an 18-year association with the club. He stepped down after transferring his shares to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

An FSG spokesperson stated: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

No agreement has yet been finalised, with discussions said to be in their initial stages.

In 2023, FSG sold a minority stake in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty, and any potential deal involving Bhatia is expected to follow a similar model.

FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team and the Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey franchise, acquired Liverpool in 2010 for around £300 million. The club has since grown substantially in value, with Forbes recently estimating its worth at £4.6 billion.

On Tuesday, Amit Bhatia officially announced his exit from QPR, where he had served as vice-chairman before becoming chairman in 2018—a position he held for five years.

Speaking on QPR’s official website, the 46-year-old reflected: “Since joining the club in 2007, QPR has been a deeply important part of my life and my family’s life.”

He continued: “Over nearly two decades we have shared promotions, relegations, unforgettable highs and painful lows, and the memories we have made at Loftus Road alongside the supporters will stay with us forever.

“I step back from my formal responsibilities with pride, gratitude and affection. I want to thank the players, managers, staff, the community trust, my fellow board members and, above all, the fans, who have made me and my family feel part of the QPR family for so many years.”

He added: “QPR will always have a very special place in my heart.”

Bhatia is also known as the son-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal, executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s largest steel and mining corporations. Forbes recently valued Mittal’s fortune at £23.2 billion.

Earlier this year, in May, Mittal partnered with Adar Poonawalla to acquire a controlling stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals.
