Digital payments in the country are undergoing continuous transformations. UPI transactions are currently widely used; however, preparations are underway to introduce a new feature that will enable UPI transactions even without an internet connection. To achieve this, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is preparing to launch a 'Tap to Pay' feature. This will allow users to make payments by simply tapping their smartphones on a POS (Point of Sale) machine, utilizing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

**What is NFC Technology?**
The new payment facility will be based on NFC (Near Field Communication). This technology eliminates the need to scan QR codes or keep the internet turned on. However, the user must have a balance in their UPI Lite account, and their smartphone must support NFC. Payments will be completed by tapping the phone against a compatible POS machine, making the process significantly faster as there will be no need to enter a PIN.

**How ​​the Payment Will Work**
You will need the internet to load funds into your UPI Lite account; however, if the account already has a balance, no internet connection will be required at the time of payment. When making a payment at a store, you simply need to touch your NFC-enabled phone to the POS machine—no PIN entry is required. The system will store the payment authorization from the wallet, and the payment details will be transmitted to the bank once the phone or machine regains internet connectivity. A specific limit will be set for these payments.

For security reasons, the offline payment system will have a maximum transaction limit of ₹2,000. This system will benefit people in remote areas where internet connectivity is often unreliable, as well as prove highly useful in underground locations.
