Toyota’s Trailhunter series represents the brand’s most capable off-road lineup, and for 2027, the Tundra pickup is set to receive a serious overlanding-oriented transformation.

Unveiled on Tuesday morning, the 2027 Toyota Tundra range undergoes a typical mid-cycle refresh, but the newly introduced Trailhunter variant offers much more than a redesigned front end. The package includes Michelin LTX Trail tyres, an Old Man Emu suspension system, front recovery hooks, and additional underbody protection as part of its comprehensive mechanical upgrade. Toyota has also equipped the model with its proprietary Multi-Terrain Select drive mode system and a locking rear differential to optimise traction on varied terrains. From a design standpoint, the Trailhunter stands out with distinctive bronze-finished 18-inch alloy wheels and exclusive badging specific to the variant.

All Tundra models continue to be powered by Toyota’s 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, though select variants feature the brand’s hybrid i-Force Max system. The Japanese carmaker has yet to disclose which powertrain will be fitted to the Tundra Trailhunter. While the Trailhunter versions of the 4Runner and Tacoma utilise the hybrid-electric i-Force Max 2.4-litre turbocharged inline-four engine, Toyota has confirmed that the Tundra Trailhunter will be based on the SR5 trim. The current Tundra SR5 is a non-hybrid model producing 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Additional updates to the 2027 Tundra lineup include a newly developed audio and multimedia setup created in collaboration with AT&T. The system now incorporates 5G network connectivity and comes standard with an integrated Driver Recorder dash camera. The exterior camera system can record 20-second clips, both manually and automatically triggered. The front grille-mounted LED light bar has been upgraded for improved brightness, and a Rigid fog light package is available as an optional feature. Furthermore, a 14-inch infotainment display is now standard across all Tundra variants.

Toyota has not yet disclosed pricing or production information for the 2027 Tundra. Similarly, detailed mechanical specifications for the upcoming Trailhunter variant remain under wraps. The company has stated that more information will be shared later this fall.
