Veteran Australian opener David Warner is in controversy again. Warner has confessed his crime before the court in the drink and drive case. Now he is going to be punished soon. Warner was found drunk and driving in April this year, after which he was arrested. The police released him on bail but the case was going on in the court.
On Wednesday (July 22), his lawyer said Warner admitted to drinking and driving. After this confession of Warner, the court will pronounce the sentence on August 18. They may be sentenced to a jail term of up to 9 months and may also face heavy fines.
The entire incident took place on 5th April. Warner, who returned to Australia after a break from the Pakistan Super League (PSL), was found drunk driving in Sydney’s east on Easter day and stopped just before a random testing site. After this, his breath test was done, in which his alcohol level was found to be 0.104. This was more than double the legal limit set in Australia. He was arrested and taken to the police station and then appeared in the court.
Warner’s lawyer Bobby Hill indicated during the preliminary hearing that his client would plead guilty. Bobby Hill had said in the court, ‘Many of us take such wrong decisions. I think the important thing is that we accept those wrong decisions and take responsibility for them.
Warner had taken his last drink just 11 minutes before the police arrived. Bobby Hill had said in the court, ‘It does not matter whether you are a businessman, a doctor or one of the best opening batsmen in the world. This threat remains for each one of us.
Warner did not reach the court for the hearing. His lawyer appeared in a Sydney court and pleaded guilty to mid-range drink-driving. After admitting to drink and drive, Warner may lose the captaincy of Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder. Sydney Thunder is part of an anti-drink and driving campaign.
