Rehydration after sleep

After several hours of sleep, the body becomes mildly dehydrated through breathing and perspiration. Drinking a cup of lime juice in the morning replenishes fluids, aids circulation, regulates body temperature, transports nutrients, and maintains organ activities.

The biggest advantage of lime juice comes from a fully hydrated body. If adding a few slices of lime makes it easier to drink and gradually helps you develop the habit of drinking lime juice after waking up then this can be a healthy habit, according to Health.

Providing vitamin C and antioxidants

Lime is a natural source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect cells from the effects of free radicals, the immune system, the wound-healing process, and collagen synthesis.

According to Verywell Healthone medium-sized lime contains 30-40 mg vitamin C, equivalent to about half an adult’s recommended daily intake. But the amount of vitamin C in a cup of lime juice is not enough to replace a diet rich in leafy greens and fruits.

Aiding digestion

Drinking water first thing in the morning can also stimulate bowel motility, which makes bowel movements easier. Although citric acid in lime can stimulate digestive secretions, there is no scientific evidence that lime juice improves digestion more than plain water.

Reducing the risk of kidney stones

Limes contain citrate, a compound that can link with calcium in urine, which limits the formation of calcium kidney stones.Increasing citrate intake through lime can offer certain benefits for people at risk of having kidney stones. Nevertheless, the amount of citrate in a glass of lime juice is relatively small and should not replace medical treatment or medications prescribed by healthcare professionals.

Damaging tooth enamel

While rich in nutrients, lime is also highly acidic. Frequent exposure to citric acid can erode tooth enamel over time, leading to tooth sensitivity and an increased risk of cavities. To minimize this effect, one should drink lime juice through a straw, avoid holding it in their mouth, rinse their mouth with water afterward and wait 30-60 minutes before brushing teeth.

Worsening acid reflux

For people with gastroesophageal reflux or frequent heartburn, lime juice can worsen the symptoms. If you experience heartburn, upper abdominal pain, or increased acid reflux after drinking lime juice, consider cutting down on the amount of lime or switching to water.

For most healthy people, one cup of lime juice in the morning is a safe choice without too much sugar or honey. People with acid reflux, stomach ulcers, or sensitive tooth enamel should drink in moderation and monitor the body’s reaction.
