Instagram Sensitive Content Getting Shadow Ban: As everyone knows that currently student protest is going on in Delhi, regarding which many things keep coming to light, but now the social media platform Instagram has come into controversy regarding the protest. In which many content creators and users claim that the reach of photos and videos to the demonstration has suddenly reduced. Some posts have been labeled as sensitive content without any apparent reason. Whereas users say that they only include news coverage and TV footage. After this entire incident, questions are being raised on Meta’s content moderation process and transparency.
Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) founder and lawyer Apar Gupta has said that many Instagram stories and posts have been limited and messages of sensitive content are visible on them. Regarding which he says that the platform is not telling on the basis of which rule or community standard this action is being taken. It has also come to light in the reports that the same warning is visible on some posts of Cockroach Janata Party i.e. CJP and politician Anish Gawande. At the same time, IFF has demanded from Meta to clarify whether these restrictions are not to any government legal request.
Regarding this matter, many users claim that their Instagram Discovery page is no longer showing the content to the protest as before. Some people also said that posts that were labeled as sensitive content could not be seen even after clicking on Know More.
But Instagram has already clarified in its official blog that no single algorithm on the platform decides which content will be visible to whom. The company says that different algorithms and classifiers together decide the visibility of the content.
For information, let us tell you that on Wednesday evening, the official Instagram account of CJP with about 25 million i.e. 2.5 crore followers has been temporarily blocked in India. In the message shown by Meta, it was said that following the legal request, this content is being limited in India. Earlier, the account of CJP spokesperson Saurav Das was also suspended due to the mistake of the automated moderation system, which was later restored.
After the information about the matter came to light, experts believe that during violence, riots or major protests, social media platforms can limit the access to content in some circumstances. But if such action is taken without clear reason and transparency, it gives rise to serious debate about freedom of expression and digital rights. In such cases, users have the right to know why the reach of their posts has been reduced or limited.
