Diet Tips : Protein is a nutrient made up of amino acids. It helps build body cells, muscles, skin, hair, nails and many other organs. It also plays an important role in their repair and proper functioning. However, there is a lot of confusion regarding its intake. Nowadays, we often hear the saying, “The more protein you eat, the fitter you will be.” But the truth is, there is a right amount for every good thing, and protein is no different.

Protein is essential for our body because it builds and repairs muscles. But this does not mean that the more protein you eat, the greater the benefits. If you are completely healthy, a high-protein diet is generally considered safe for the short term. However, consuming too much protein over a long period of time, especially from red meat and processed meat, can be problematic. It also increases saturated fat, which is considered unhealthy for heart health.

Expert opinion on protein intake

Caution with kidney disease – Richa Sharma, senior dietician and head of dietetics at Yathharth Superspeciality Hospital, says that people who already have kidney disease should avoid consuming too much protein, as it can put extra stress on the kidneys. Some research has also shown that consuming too much animal protein can increase the risk of kidney stones.

Focusing on High Protein Wrong – Another mistake people often make is to focus only on protein and cut back on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. This results in a lack of fiber, vitamins and minerals. This can lead to problems like constipation, disrupting the overall balance of the diet. Experts advise overeating. Take as much protein as you need based on your age, daily activity and health.

Keep diet in mind – Also, try not to get your protein from just one source. Include a variety of sources of protein in your diet, such as beans, legumes, nuts, dairy, eggs and fish. Ultimately, good health is not just about eating more protein, but about a balanced and wholesome diet.
