The German Football Association has appointed former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as head coach of the men’s national team following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Germany crashed out in the round of 32 after a 5–4 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay. Klopp has signed a contract extending until the conclusion of the 2030 World Cup, according to Goal.com.
He replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down earlier this year after a mutual agreement to end his contract originally set to run until 2028. Nagelsmann had taken over from Hansi Flick in 2023.
Klopp is regarded as one of the finest modern coaches, having won two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012. During his tenure at Liverpool from 2015 to 2024, he led the club to the UEFA Champions League title in 2019, the Premier League championship in 2020, and the FA Cup in the 2021–22 season.
The German Football Association intends for Klopp to spearhead a rebuilding process and restore the national team’s prestige on the international stage ahead of the 2030 World Cup. Since their 2014 World Cup victory, Germany has experienced group stage exits in 2018 and 2022, followed by this year’s round of 32 elimination.
