Facing incessant rains, surging flood waters and extremely challenging conditions, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has been at the forefront of massive humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and search and rescue (SAR) operations in Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and South Gujarat.

Indian Coast Guard disaster relief teams (DRTs) and helicopters have rescued 170 stranded people through 11 rescue operations conducted since midnight on July 22, a release said.

ICG disaster relief teams conducted tireless, round-the-clock rescue operations, wading through submerged areas, navigating flood-affected areas and reaching places inaccessible by road. Coast Guard helicopters complemented these efforts through timely air evacuation of stranded civilians from isolated and severely inundated areas.

Many difficult rescue operations were carried out

According to the release, the operation began with the rescue of five stranded people from Khanvel, Silvassa during the night of July 22 and 23, followed by the rescue of three fishermen stranded on the banks of the flooded river in the Kadiya coastal area.

In one of the largest operations, 60 people stranded in the flood-hit Welspun Industrial Area, where road connectivity was completely lost, were rescued on the night of July 23 and 24. Further rescue operations included rescue of seven people from a bus stuck in flood waters near Aero Fiber Pvt Ltd, rescue of ten people from Dongri, and rescue of four stranded people by helicopter from Valsad-Pardi area. Eight more people were rescued from the Reliance Industries area during overnight operations.

In another important mission, ten people stranded in Awadh Society area were rescued, including a nine-month pregnant woman and a woman suffering from respiratory distress.

Airlift of 33 people by helicopter

On 24 July, two Indian Coast Guard helicopters successfully airlifted 33 stranded people from Mendar village in Navsari district, including a man who was suffering from severe chest pain, ensuring timely medical assistance.

"The coordinated rescue effort reflects the Indian Coast Guard's operational readiness, quick response capability and steadfast commitment to protect life during natural disasters. Despite incessant rains, strong currents and hazardous conditions, the Coast Guard personnel continued the operation without a break, reaffirming the service's motto of selfless dedication to the nation," the release said.
