If you are planning to use an Apple iPhone, Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch by paying a monthly fee under a lease program instead of purchasing it outright, this news is significant for you. A new report claims that if a user fails to pay installments on time, Apple could restrict the use of various features and apps on the device. New system found in iOS 27 Beta

According to a report by 9to5Mac, a new framework called "App Managed Features" has been spotted in the iOS 27 Beta. This system allows an authorized financing or leasing app to register the iPhone and periodically check its status. The report suggests that if the terms of the lease contract are not met—such as failing to make timely payments—the system could restrict access to several device features.

Apple's new lease program

A few days ago, a Bloomberg report claimed that Apple is preparing to launch a new lease program called "Apple Upgrade" in the US starting July 28.

Under this plan, customers will be able to use Apple devices like the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch by paying a fixed monthly fee, rather than buying them. This arrangement will be quite similar to car leasing. Upon completion of the lease term, customers can return the device or upgrade to a new model by paying an additional fee. According to the report, the lease period will be 24 months for the iPhone and Apple Watch, while it will be 36 months for the Mac and iPad.

The report states that if a customer fails to make timely payments or if the lease contract falls out of compliance for other reasons, a "Restricted Mode" could be activated on the Apple device. In this state, the use of most apps on the device could be disabled. However, certain essential apps would continue to function so that the user retains access to critical services.

Which apps will continue to work? According to code found in the iOS 27 Beta, essential apps such as Accessibility Reader, App Store, Health, Magnifier, Phone, Clock, Settings, Wallet, Passwords, and the Restricted Mode interface may remain accessible during Restricted Mode. Additionally, apps like Messages, Home, and certain health or safety-related apps might remain functional; however, the final decision regarding which apps are permitted will depend on the financing company's policy.

App Subscriptions and the New Finance Lock

The report also notes that if an app is restricted, any associated App Store subscription will not automatically be cancelled. In other words, while the user would be unable to use the app, the subscription charges could continue.

A new system named "Partner Finance Lock" was also identified in the code. Its purpose is to prevent users from resetting the device to sell it or strip it for parts. This system will integrate with Apple's "Find My" framework, though the report indicates that the financing company will not have access to the device's location data; the system will be used solely to maintain the finance lock.
