Sonam Wangchuk’s Clarification on Ending his Fast : Questions are being raised about activist Sonam Wangchuk breaking the fast without Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. Many people have attacked Wangchuk for ending the fast in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. On which he clarified that whether I need to take character certificate from anyone after being hungry for 26 days.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk released a video clarifying that she ended her 26-day hunger strike without the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan because her priority was to stop any legal action against the protesters who took part in ‘Cockroach Janata Party’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march on Monday over the paper leak. During this time the police had taken lathi charge action against him.
Wangchuk has answered the questions of critics by sharing videos on his YouTube channel and X. In the video released on On the clip included in this video, he said, “Friends, I am making this video with some sadness, surprise, grief and anger.”
The social worker said, “After fasting for 26 days for my sisters, brothers and students, in which I have lost 11 kg of my body. Muscles are gone…organs and brain are damaged. After doing all this from the cold of Ladakh to the scorching heat of Delhi, will I need to get a character certificate from anyone as to how sacred my fast was. If I broke it, then at whose hand did I break it…what a deal.” It happened. I have to answer for all this.”
Wangchuk said, “Since yesterday, I am now taking liquid food, so a little life has come in my body. Unfortunately, I have to give that life (strength) in this (cleanliness). I am saying this with sadness, but since the beginning, many people have been calling me or showing me posts and saying that you are raising a lot of questions. Why did you make them (Union ministers) break the fast? He asked, “If I have to make a deal, Had it been so, would I have remained hungry for 26 days? Couldn’t I compromise by sitting in an air-conditioned room instead of fasting in the heat of Delhi?”
There was a fear that the situation would worsen
Sonam Wangchuk emphasized that her primary goal was to ensure that students involved in the protests did not face violence or legal consequences. “My focus was on ensuring that students do not face any problems. My main concern was about legal action and FIR. I personally did not find it necessary to secure the minister’s resignation,” he said. He also added that the ongoing movement will continue to raise this demand.
Wangchuk further said, “Last night around 12 o’clock, I was told that the minister has agreed to give a written assurance. I was in a hurry because the situation in Delhi was like this, there was a fear that some major action could be taken. I was watching the news and I remembered September 24, 2025, when police and CRPF personnel had mercilessly opened fire on the youth of Ladakh. I was afraid that something similar could happen here too. I felt that if I end my fast and appeal for peace, maybe the situation will calm down.”
“The biggest pain in my heart is that when I ended my fast, my colleagues, students and MPs who had come to support me could not be there,” he said at the end of the 24-minute video recorded from his hospital bed.
