Atalanta have sent a sharp public message to Manchester United after the £35m Ederson transfer fell through, sharing a run of videos and photographs of the 27-year-old midfielder when he returned to the club in what seems to be a deliberate attempt to question United’s medical verdict.

The report, carried by The People’s Person, highlights the ongoing tension between the two clubs after a deal that appeared certain in June broke down in circumstances that are still being disputed.

United and Atalanta had already agreed a £35m fee for Ederson before the summer window officially opened – a clear sign of intent from the Reds, who moved with unusual speed to land a midfield target. The move ran into trouble immediately when Ederson was handed a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad, which meant United had to put the medical on hold until after the tournament.

After that process was completed, Fabrizio Romano reported that United had decided not to go ahead after the full medical identified a point of concern. The issues that had been building behind the scenes eventually became decisive. Reports have suggested the concern was connected to his knee, although United have not confirmed the exact nature of the problem.

Ederson himself was understood to be disappointed with how things unfolded, having seen Old Trafford as his preferred destination. The stage at which the medical raised concerns now appears to have been the decisive moment that made the transfer impossible to rescue.

Atalanta have repeatedly maintained that Ederson’s fitness is not in doubt, and their social media posts on his return – the fitness videos and photos – read as a direct response aimed at defending both the player’s reputation and his market value. The Italian club later confirmed that Ederson has signed a new contract, although the length of the extension was not revealed.

Talk that United might return for the deal later in the summer, on revised terms, is being described as highly unlikely at this stage. Michael Carrick’s side have already moved on, bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The hunt for a third midfielder is still ongoing, with Manu Kone, Carlos Baleba, Alex Scott, and Adam Wharton among the names being considered.
