Nottingham Forest have surged ahead in the race for Feyenoord full-back Givairo Reid, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Forest have put in a second offer valued at a €20 million package – leaving Manchester United scrambling if they are genuinely serious about signing the player.

Romano, whose X post forms the basis of this update, said that personal terms are not a problem for Reid and described the situation as a deal in progress between Forest and Feyenoord.

The wider context is important here. Tyrell Malacia left United at the end of June when his contract expired, which means Luke Shaw is now the only fit, senior natural left-back in the squad. Noussair Mazraoui can deputise there, but he is not a specialist, and Harry Amass is still finding his feet at senior level.

Shaw’s 38 Premier League starts last season were a real exception considering his injury history, which makes Forest’s quick progress on Reid even more uncomfortable reading for United.

United have been linked with a number of options in this position. Lewis Hall of Newcastle has been mentioned as a target, and Reid is a player who looks ready for the next step.

Two brilliant seasons at Feyenoord have marked him out as someone ready for the next level – an all-action full-back, a constant outlet, always available to receive the ball in advanced areas and influence the game in the final third. Liverpool were also said to be monitoring him, which highlighted the level of competition United were facing even before Forest stepped up their pursuit.

In the end, it is Forest who have done the running. With a second offer on the table, the player open to the move, and Romano presenting it as a deal in progress, United are left with a simple decision: act now or let the player go to a direct Premier League rival. There is not much time left.
