What exactly are fibroids?

Uterine fibroids (Uterine Fibroids) are basically a type of tumor (Fibroid Tumor), which grows slowly under the influence of estrogen hormone in the body. Many women do not feel it at the beginning, regular health check-up or at least once a year ultrasonography (USG) can easily detect this type of tumor in the early stages, said Dr. Kanyakumari Estrogen and progesterone play an important role in the growth of uterine fibroids. The type and complexity of treatment depends on whether the tumor is growing inside the uterus, in the middle layer, outside. These tumors grow faster when the level of estrogen hormone in the body is high. The risk of obesity increases manifold especially if there is a family history of fibroids or smoking habit.

According to Dr. Kanyakumari, a patient’s symptoms depend on where the fibroids are forming. Irregular and excessive bleeding, frequent periods or unbearable pain in the lower abdomen are the main symptoms of fibroids. However, many do not show any early symptoms. In that case, routine ultrasonography or health screening at least once a year can detect this tumor at an early stage.

If you have fibroids, do you have to do surgery?

Dr. Kanyakumari Kundu said, if fibroids are detected in small size or early stages, treatment is possible with certain drugs without any surgery. Tumors can be shrunk or completely eradicated with medication. However, even if the tumor disappears with medication, regular follow-up is required, because about 50% of women are at risk of fibroid recurrence! If the fibroid grows to 5 cm or more, doctors go the surgical route. Especially with fibroids as large as 10 cm, whether symptomatic or not, it is wise to undergo surgery if women want to become mothers in the future or to maintain a healthy life. Because these large size tumors can create great pressure on other organs inside the abdomen. Such as creating severe constipation by pressing on the rectum or creating uncomfortable complications such as increasing the frequency of urination by pressing on the bladder.

Can fibroids be cured by lifestyle corrections?

However, a healthy lifestyle and weight control can help reduce the risk.
