Mumbai: A 19-year-old medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district after reportedly becoming distressed over her score in the NEET re-examination. Police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation into the incident.
The deceased, identified as Ankita Sangalewas a resident of Jalalpur village in Karjat taluka. According to police, she allegedly died by suicide at her home on Saturday after securing. 166 points in the NEET re-test. Family members reportedly found her in her study room after she did not respond for a prolonged period and immediately alerted the police.
Investigators said a note recovered from the scene referred to disappointment over her NEET re-test result. Her family claimed Ankita had been under immense emotional stress after receiving a score far below her expectations. They also alleged that she had performed significantly better in the original examination before the alleged paper leak led to a re-examination.
The Karjat Police have registered an accidental death case based on the family’s complaint. Officials are examining all aspects of the incident, including the contents of the note and the circumstances leading to her death.
The incident triggered political reactions, with NCP (SP) MP Nilesh Lanke visiting Ankita’s family to offer condolences. He demanded accountability from those responsible for the alleged NEET paper leak and called for legal action against those found guilty.
NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also expressed grief, urging students not to lose hope after academic setbacks and encouraging them to seek support during difficult times.
The case comes weeks after another alleged NEET- suicide in Nashik district, where a 21-year-old aspirant reportedly died a day before the scheduled re-test. The back-to-back incidents have intensified concerns over the emotional impact of examination- uncertainty on students.
