Harry Amass has been linked with interest from several Championship clubs this summer

Manchester United defender Harry Amass spent last season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City.

The full-back made a strong impact with the Owls, making 21 appearances for the club as they battled for results because of major off-field problems.

The teenager enjoyed his first run of regular senior minutes under Henrik Pedersen and was rewarded with the player of the month award at Hillsborough for both November and December.

However, he was recalled by the Premier League side in January, which led to his move to Carrow Road, where he eventually struggled with fitness problems.

It has now been reported that Man United are ready to sell Amass this summer, with a £6 million price tag set on him.

Birmingham City were hit hard by Kai Wagner’s departure earlier in the window, with the full-back returning to Philadelphia Union just six months after joining the Blues.

This has left the Midlands side needing a new full-back, and Amass could be a smart choice as a direct replacement for the German.

Both are fairly aggressive in possession and like to join the attack, and Amass showed during his spell with Sheffield Wednesday that he has the ability to compete at a high level in the Championship.

At 19, the defender still has plenty of scope to improve his game, and Davies could be an ideal coach to help him develop further.

If Birmingham are prepared to spend £6 million, or close to that amount, then this could prove to be a very smart piece of business in both the short term and the long term.

Amass is a player who could be worth far more than £6 million in the future if he lives up to the high expectations around him.

A return to Norwich for next season could still make a lot of sense for Philippe Clement’s side.

It was a genuine disappointment for everyone that a run of injury problems meant Amass only played once for the Canaries last season.

With the uncertainty around Kellen Fisher’s future, this is still an area the club may want to strengthen before the 1 September deadline, especially with Ben Chrisene and Lucien Mahovo as their only other current options.

A deal worth around the £6 million mark may be a little risky for Norwich, but if Amass can move past his fitness issues then it could turn into a strong signing for the club.

The defender is still only 19, and his impressive Championship performances for Sheffield Wednesday show what he can do when he is at his best.

In a side that found it hard to compete in the second division last season, Amass created 0.57 chances per 90 from left-back, won 7.7 duels and 1.24 aerial duels every game (all stats from Fotmob).

Amass also made 3.11 tackles and 1.24 interceptions per 90, which underlines his defensive strength while also showing that he can still push forward and contribute in attack.

The youngster is a threat in the final third while also offering defensive stability, so he could become an even more valuable asset in the future if he comes anywhere near his full potential.
