Guwahati, July 29 – The death toll from the floods in Assam has tragically risen to 78, following the loss of three more lives on Wednesday, as reported by an official bulletin. Currently, approximately 300,000 individuals across seven districts are still grappling with the effects of the flooding.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, over the next three days in various regions of Assam, as well as in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the recent fatalities include two individuals from Sivasagar district and one from Golaghat, contributing to the increasing death toll.
The flood-affected districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Kamrup Urban, with a total of 551 villages impacted. Charaideo is the hardest-hit district, with 137,561 residents affected by the floods.
In Sivasagar, 84,600 people are affected, while Jorhat has 49,911 individuals impacted. On Tuesday, the number of flood-affected individuals across six districts was reported at 332,000. Over 16,500 displaced individuals have sought refuge in 71 relief camps.
Additionally, more than 72,000 people are receiving assistance through 30 relief distribution centers. Various agencies, including teams of doctors and veterinarians, are actively engaged in rescue operations in the affected areas. The floods have submerged 21,523.08 hectares of agricultural land.
Over 11,000 livestock have been swept away, with another 17,000 affected. The ASDMA bulletin also indicated damage to infrastructure, including embankments, homes, roads, schools, and other public properties. Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with strong winds in parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from July 30 to August 1, which may further impact Tinsukia, Dhemaji, and Lakhimpur districts.
An orange alert has been issued for Tinsukia district, urging residents to remain vigilant. An orange alert has also been declared for the districts of Mon, Mokokchung, and Wokha in Nagaland, which could affect Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts in Assam.
