Carlo Ancelotti has explained why he rejected an approach to take charge of the Italy national team, choosing instead to continue with Brazil. The 67-year-old coach reiterated his commitment to the Selecao project after a turbulent managerial search by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

Ancelotti was identified as the leading candidate by the FIGC after yet another major reshuffle within the national team structure. But the former Real Madrid manager declined the chance to coach his home nation and decided to stay in charge of Brazil.

Italy technical director Paolo Maldini recently confirmed that Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola were the FIGC's first-choice candidates for the vacant role. In the end, the managerial process descended into chaos, with Maldini resigning before Claudio Ranieri was appointed technical director and Roberto Mancini was named head coach.

Having begun his coaching journey as an assistant with Italy under Arrigo Sacchi from 1992 to 1995, accepting the Azzurri role would have marked an emotional full-circle moment for Ancelotti. Even so, the veteran manager made it clear that his loyalty remains fully with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Speaking to ESPN's Pedro Ivo Almeida, Ancelotti explained his position: "It's not a contract issue; that's not the reason. It's because I have a commitment to the CBF and to this country, because this country has welcomed me so warmly during this first year. I want to stay here."

Although Ancelotti politely rejected the proposal, he also made a point of thanking the FIGC for its interest. He stressed that remaining in South America was the only correct decision considering the backing he has received since taking charge of the Selecao.

"And I thanked the Italian Federation, of course, but I want to stay here because I believe it's right and fair to remain in a country that has welcomed me so warmly, at an institution that has given me the opportunity to work," he added.

Ancelotti's choice means his future remains firmly tied to South America for the long term. The Italian tactician signed a contract extension with the CBF before the 2026 World Cup, keeping him with the Brazil national team until June 2030.

That long-term deal means Ancelotti will lead Brazil through the transition into the post-Neymar era. His main focus will now be on steering the Selecao through the upcoming CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, the 2028 Copa America, and preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
