The monsoon rains, which brought relief from the scorching heat and heat waves, have also brought with them serious health challenges. Amid the drop in temperatures, the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued an alert regarding waterborne diseases in the country. According to officials, even minor negligence regarding drinking water during this season is making people vulnerable to serious illnesses like stomach flu and gastroenteritis.
According to an NCDC report, drinking water sources are most rapidly contaminated during the rainy season due to sewage water entering pipelines or waterlogging. This contaminated water is a major cause of stomach flu (viral gastroenteritis). Doctors have warned that consuming open food, cut fruits, and unclean water during this season directly invites stomach infections. Hospital outpatient departments have seen a sudden increase in the number of patients suffering from vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and high fever.
To stay safe from infection this season, the administration and health department have issued some important guidelines for citizens. They have been asked to ensure the cleanliness of water tanks and to stay away from waterlogged areas.
