Significant Update for PG Aspirants: Students aiming for a postgraduate degree at Delhi University have received exciting news. The institution has decided to expand the number of seats available for its newly launched one-year postgraduate programs, a change that has been eagerly anticipated by both students and faculty. This decision comes after recommendations from a specially formed committee within the university, providing relief to those looking to pursue a Master's degree following the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP).

Delhi University has notably raised the seat capacity for sought-after courses like MA, MSc, and MCom. While students are pleased with this development, faculty members have voiced their apprehensions. Educators argue that increasing seats without sufficient preparation or infrastructure could jeopardize educational quality and lead to overcrowding in labs and classrooms.

Seat Increases Across Various Subjects:
The university has more than doubled the seat numbers in several key departments. For instance, courses such as MA English, History, Philosophy, and Political Science, along with MSc Mathematics and MCom, have seen their seat count rise from 45 to 126, an increase of 81 seats. Additionally, the number of seats for MA Economics has surged from 40 to 126. Psychology and Chemistry have increased from 45 to 63 seats, while MSc Statistics will now accommodate 54 students instead of 29.

Students Call for More Seats:
Those who have completed the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP) are welcoming this decision. Applicants for the MA History program express that the increased seat availability enhances their chances of admission and reduces competitive stress. However, some students argue that, given the number of colleges under DU, the seat count should ideally approach 200, considering the high volume of FYUP graduates.

Professors Warn of Potential Issues:
Faculty members at Delhi University have criticized this decision as poorly thought out. Reports indicate that professors from various affiliated colleges believe the university lacks the infrastructure to support the influx of new students. A sudden increase in enrollment could negatively impact the student-teacher ratio.

Challenges in Classrooms and Laboratories:
Educators are concerned that this rapid expansion will hinder science students' access to laboratories for practical work, while classrooms in the Arts faculty may become overcrowded. This situation could detract from the overall learning experience. The university should have assessed the actual number of students likely to enroll in the one-year PG course, as not every FYUP graduate will choose this path.

Previously, until the 2025-26 academic session, DU offered only two-year master's programs. The introduction of the one-year PG program aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP) and is set to commence this academic year.
