Everton are understood to be getting ready with a transfer approach for Manchester United youngster Ethan Wheatley, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 20-year-old striker has made only four first-team appearances for Manchester United and has also spent time away from Old Trafford on three loan spells with Walsall, Northampton Town and Bradford City.

It now appears possible that Wheatley could leave United on a permanent basis, with Romano reporting that Everton are preparing to make a formal approach for the player.

Romano shared the following update this afternoon:

“EXCL: Everton are interested in Man United talented striker Ethan Wheatley. #EFC preparing a proposal to make formal approach with Man United soon for the 20 year old forward,” Romano said.

Manchester United’s academy has produced many outstanding young players over the years and across previous decades, but not all of them can go on to become regular first-team players for the club.

Wheatley appears to be one who is highly rated, but perhaps not quite at the level required to make the step up to playing regularly for Manchester United.

Everton could therefore represent a strong next step for Wheatley as he looks to move forward in his career, with the Toffees likely to offer him more first-team opportunities.

Everton manager David Moyes has often worked well with young players in the past, playing an important role in the development of major names such as Wayne Rooney and Declan Rice during his managerial career.

It will be interesting to see how Wheatley develops if this move goes through, and one would imagine that United will continue to monitor his progress in the years ahead.
